Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
Released on November 16 2005, pretty much as soon as the Xbox
360 was shipped out to the public, placed the Xbox live arcade on the map for
cheap value for money games that were enjoyable. The developers, Bizarre
Creations blew up the Xbox live arcade with their smash hit game Geometry wars.
The game brought back classic arcade Multi-Directional Shooters back with a
modern twist. When I first played the game, I didn’t exactly get what was going
on because there were so many different colours and explosions going off
simultaneously, but after persistently playing the game I grabbed a general
idea of what was happening. There were never really any competitors for this
game as it was so unique until super stardust HD was released for the
PlayStation 3 which was also a Multi-Directional Shooter but introduced a 3D
landscape to play in and had in game missions. The gameplay of Geometry wars: Retro
Evolved was very fast paced and addicting, the game would beat you but you
would just want to keep going and going, the only downside to the gameplay was
there were only 2 game modes “ Evolved “ and “ Retro “ both being very intense
but easy to grasp game modes. Adding to the games greatness the sound of the
game is very crisp and fast paced, the song which is involved with the game
modes is very upbeat and creates a very fast paced atmospheric value, there are
many different sounds imported into the game which include, the sound of the
guns your ship has, the jet that moves the ship, the sound of the
mobs/colourful shapes being spawned into the game, the music and also the
explosion of the mobs. The graphics are very sharp and colourful, which make it
an easy to see game but when you progress further into the game there are just
that many different colours you’re just shooting and trying to manoeuvre
through giant blocks of colour. There is no real story line to the game as
there is only one main objective to each game mode. Although there are a lot of
different enemy characters, Duck: These guys don’t move or do much. Wanderer:
These are somewhat chaotic shapes that like to move around. Rocket: These fly
in straight horizontal or vertical lines. Grunt: These guys will stalk you all
across the playing area. Amoeba: You will need to aim your shots at the middle
of these guys to clear them. Gravity Well: These are your one friend in the
game, shoot the Gravity Well to make it spin and pull other enemy’s into them.
Snake: These guys are wiggly, long and can only be destroyed by being shot in
the head. There are no real online features to it other than the leader boards
where you battle to get to the top, there is a multiplayer in the game but it
is only split screen which is on the same Xbox 360 console. To conclude my
review of this fantastic game, I would certainly give it a 9/10 it would be a
perfect 10 if it had more game modes which had a wider variety of objective.
